    Poster/Print

As part of the steel painting / metallic re-animation process, these prints each show a semi-abstract scene based on the archives. They are small (to reflect the 'sonic postcards from fragile petro-masculinity' idea), and printed on silver halide emulsion paper, so they also have a shimmering effect. Includes the digital album forgerons et alchimistes, as well as unlimited streaming of the feature film, You Call It Sundew.

about

sonic postcards from fragile petromasculinity / a nine track score made while working on an experimental film about metallurgy and extraction (see main page for film at Fermynwoods Contemporary Art: fermynwoods.org/you-call-it-sundew-amy-cutler/)

The film, You Call It Sundew (2020), re-animates and excavates moving image archives and their narrations, which presented a kind of pastoral symphony for the steel industry and its machine "animals". The re-animation works with blue prints, displaced marsh plants, fossils, factory symphonies, carnivorous sundews, underwater warfare, and layered experiments painting on metal and various steels. It flips the narratives of ingenuity and Man's power over the fruits of the earth, drawing on archives of the HMS Conundrum, the PLUTO pipeline, and the Sundew walking excavator.

This accompanying score is inspired by Jane Bennett's writing on 'the life of metal' from the point of view of metal - 'a continuous melody of copper', or the unstable vitality of 'these filmy sheathes...like wisps of fog', as well as Mircea Eliade's work on the temporality of these 'celestial metals'. The sound worlds of the archive collide with lost choruses of metal fatigue and underwater sea change, as well as ideas of shift work, alloys, and singing 'in the round'.
